Lightnings368 at Up River YC Winter Series 2012

With the onset of winter the serious sailing started with the Winter Series at Up River YC. In total 6 Lightning’s would contest the series and one would come out on top, but who? Well in race 1 it was Matt Hopkins who started where he left off at the Inlands and stormed away from the line and was never headed to win the first race ahead of the Streaker sailed by local boat builder Gerry Ledger and Penny Yarwood in the second Lightning. After Lunch it was Penny’s turn to show everyone a clean pair of heels and although Matt chased her on the...

Anti-Fowling for a Lightning

Not your usual sort of Lightning debate hey. Well Peter Taylor sent me this little photo of SeaBee, probably our only Lightning kept permanently afloat, she even has her own purpose built pontoon. So do you anti-fowl a Lightning or not??? (rhetorical question) but I think Peter is probably our only expert in such matters. I see SeaBee also has a two part mast which is also quite unusual. Not even Lee has experimented with this approach, I guess he has yet to think of it!!! Peter says he’ll start a little forum thread to explain...

BOATS WANTED

We have around six or seven people actively looking for good Lightning’s at the moment, mostly good sailable boats below the £1,000 mark, with a reasonably good sail included in the price. For this price range you can generally expect a trolley, but not always a combi, or road base trailer. Most other fittings on the boat tend to be fairly cheap and mast, rudders and centerboards last an age. A new Dacron sail is currently £337 and Dacron is coming back in fashion somewhat. A Mylar sail is a little more expensive at £365. Age is not a...

Up River Winter Series – the Final

Well it was all to play for today, one point in it between Penny and I to be crowned Queen/King of the river. I know which one I want. The morning started grey and wet, but the strong winds were fitful due to the direction over the wooded south bank. The race started just as strange. Matt made the mistake of going for a practice beat and I forgot I had snapped the rope holding the kicker block in the previous race. I noticed as I launched and had to return to the bank to make a quick fix.  Launching with 30 seconds to go and I got caught...

Up River Winter Series 2011 – Battle of the Lightnings Weekend 3

Sunday 27th November and gales swept Essex. Many people were seen standing around on river banks muttering, stupid, mad to go out in that and similar things. After an hour they decided it had dropped off enough which was great as it allowed Simon who could not make the published start time to get there, rig and make the start. The usual three Lightning’s were on the start line but not looking a gift horse in the mouth Simon powered off the line to round the first mark ahead of the Comet and Matt. Penny feeling the effects of the Flu was...

Up River Winter Series 2011 – Battle of the Lightnings

Sunday was the first of the URYC Winter Series, when we get visitors from Eyotts SC which is even further up river than we are. There are usualy a few bandits from up there. Unfortunatley only 4 Lightnings from the fleet of 11 came out to play, probably more to do with the Prize Giving Dinner Dance the night before than anything else. All told 13 boat were on the start line in the Slow handicap fleet. Race 1 was interesting, Penny started perfectly, proving a hangover is not always a bad thing (except for the pictures on facebook) and sailed...
