Bernard Patterson

Bernard Patterson

We’ve received a somewhat sad note from Anne Giles.

Sadly I have to report the passing of one of the Lightning 368 class early owners and a leading light for many years. Bernard Patterson bought Lightning no. 68 in 1982 amid great secrecy and introduced the class to the Island Sailing Club at Reading.

For many years Bernard was Class Chairman and he and his son mark were great supporters of all events with Bernard’s wife June. Bernard introduced the Travellers series and presented the trophy which Mark Patterson won at least once. Bernard himself won the Northern Championship at Glasson Dock. He was editor of Flash for several years. He also suggested and named the Rum and Mince Pie meeting, which is still so popular, this event has been copied by other classes.

His reports of events in his news letters were almost lyrical and highly amusing. When he finally gave up sailing he became the Lightning Class first and I believe only Honorary member. June Patterson died a few years ago but Bernard and his new friend Vivienne came to stay with us in Fishguard two years ago.

It was while Bernard was Chairman that the class matured from it first uncertain steps into what it has grown to today. I am sure all those who knew him in those early days will remember him with great affection.
