Welcome to another issue of Flashbytes, we are fast approaching the start of our 2012 season.
The RYA Dinghy Show
Well, I hope everyone enjoyed the Dinghy Show again this year. Certainly our stand was busier than ever with a great deal of new interest in the boat, together with people looking at and considering the new SR Rig and other new features of the current boat.
Overall the show this year seemed to have a more positive and buoyant feel about it, with the Olympics here, maybe slight better economic conditions and good levels of interest, people seemed more intent on getting back out on the water, not just in the Lightning, but sailing in general, which is good news for all I feel.
Pressure has been maintained on our second-hand market with more people than ever looking for boats and upgrade kit, particularly good second-hand sails. As you hopefully already know, you can sell anything Lightning on the website for free, all you need to do is drop me a few details for the advert by e-mail, take a look at the current ones for specific content details but feel free to jazz yours up a bit as well. Photos in png, jpg, jpeg format are fine and I can include with the adverts.

Our first event of the new season is the Haversham Training Day, next weekend the 24th March. Haversham is a great little club, with good viewing from the Clubhouse over the lake. The galley is open all day and the breakfast rolls are really quite special, all making for a very enjoyable start to the season.
Some very experienced Helms are on hand to provide coaching on and off the water, all Lightning specific stuff, so if you want to know how to trim your sail to get that little crease out in light winds, or how tight to pull in that outhaul in a blow, just pop along for a bit of guidance from the experts. There is no better way to learn, getting shown the right way to do it, with help on hand whilst you practice.

Lightnings are popping up in even more clubs now and the Boat Register and Clubs Directory continue to grow. Some of the bigger fleets are launching their new seasons with some very healthy turnouts. Up River had eight LNs out on the water last weekend, with good shows also at WOSC and Manor Park, I hope all this activity turns into even greater attendances at some open meetings.
Our Opens really are great fun and a good way to learn more about sailing the Lightning. They are not just for the experts, indeed far from it, there are far more club sailors and new helms taking part than top experts. I think it is the big range of experience and ability that make our open events just fun for the whole fleet, there are few others classes where you are going to get coaching in the race itself, albeit it is when the guys at the front are lapping those at the back.

Our first open is at Hillingdon OAC, on the 1st April (Sunday). Always a well attended event and a good event to get out there sailing and racing with other LNs. Attendance is typically very strong, last year we had twenty boats out for this event, we are looking to exceed that number again this year.
